The Country Parks Team, part of Buckinghamshire County Council, manages three popular Country Parks covering approximately 850 acres, attracting in excess of a million visitors a year. Forming a diverse and unique range of habitats and landscapes, SSSI’s, LNR’s, parkland, formal gardens to lowland heath, native and coniferous woodland, we have it all. Situated in the South of Buckinghamshire, the parks are highly valued and regarded by the surrounding local community. Operating successfully on a self-financed basis we are currently investing in existing and new facilities to ensure the parks remain sustainable into the future.
On 01 November 2018, it was announced by the government that the five councils in Buckinghamshire will become a single unitary authority in April 2020. Any changes made to the structure of local authorities in the county may affect council employees in the future. Therefore, the five councils have agreed to restrict applications to this position to current employees of the five councils for a period of 14 days from 3rd December to the 17th December. External candidates are welcome to submit their application at any point; however, if a current employee applies during this 14 day period, their application will be assessed prior to the council considering applications from external candidates.
About the role
As Country Parks Ranger, you will be the face of the Country Parks Team to over a million visitors. Most of your time will be spent outside, undertaking daily patrols and maintenance of the Country Parks.
The role requires exceptional attention to detail, ensuring our infrastructure is in good condition and keeping our facilities operational and tidy. You will be self-motivated in your delivery of practical site management tasks and confident in your engagement with visitors and volunteers.
Within the Ranger Team, your responsibilities will include carrying out safety inspections and routine repairs, assisting with the organisation and delivery of events and supporting other commercial activities within the parks.
We are looking for enthusiastic and motivated individuals to join our Country Parks Team and support us in delivering high quality visitor services and site management. You will thrive on working in a busy, fast paced environment within a growing team.
A good general level of education is essential along with work based or voluntary experience of working in Country Parks or other outdoor recreation facilities. We would be particularly interested to hear from individuals who have skills gained in practical site management and visitor services environments.
You will hold a full driving licence and be able to work on scheduled weekends, extended opening hours and bank holidays.
Where our roles are customer-facing and you are required to speak to members of the public, the ability to converse at ease with customers and provide advice in accurate spoken English is essential for the role.
Please note that the role also includes a commitment to weekend working. This attracts a weekend salary enhancement based on alternate weekend shift pattern between 1st November – 28th February and an additional three weekend working shifts (equivalent 13 weekends - two working days each weekend. Lieu days taken during working week to equate to average 37 hours per week).
