Our Business Development team is searching for a new leader to who can drive forward and lead the function to deliver our business goals, develop strong, long lasting customer relationships and deliver a great customer experience.
Fixed term contract to March 2020
The Business Development Team is part of our Customer directorate, working alongside our contact centre, customer experience and digital team, marketing and corporate business support.
About the role
The core purpose of this post is to increase external income for the Business Unit by acquiring new customers and selling additional products or services to existing ones. Whilst facing severe financial pressures, the Council has ambitions to expand its commercial operation and diversify its customer base to ensure a balanced budget.
The post’s primary responsibilities are to:
- Identifying new sales leads
- Pitching products and/or services
- Developing fruitful relationships with existing customers - which include Schools.
We currently have over 400 external business customers, many of whom are schools, and sell services to the population of Buckinghamshire. You will be tasked with developing our relationships with these customers and work with service areas to exceed their income targets by sourcing new opportunities, developing our product offerings and improving the way that we promote and trade services.
You need to be results orientated, ideally with previous experience in selling or account management, and be able to develop relationships across all levels of business. You will need strong communications skills, enthusiasm and the willingness to work in a fast paced environment!

Where our roles are customer-facing and you are required to speak to members of the public, the ability to converse at ease with customers and provide advice in accurate spoken English is essential for the role.

About the business unit
Encapsulating our Corporate and Shared Services - including HR & Organisational Development, Finance and Technology Services - you’ll change how we deliver Council services throughout our communities, making sure that all needs are championed and that we exceed our promises. Delivering a wide range of professional services, we are customer-focused and entrepreneurial with big ambitions. As well as providing high quality services to other areas of the Council, more than £6m of our revenue comes from external clients. We have a strategy to grow this even further and are looking for exceptional individuals to help us achieve it.
