On 01 November 2018, it was announced by the government that the five councils in Buckinghamshire will become a single unitary authority in April 2020.  This is an exciting opportunity for all the councils in the county to come together to build a brand new council for Buckinghamshire, building on the best experience and expertise of the five current councils.  We are developing plans with our District Council colleagues to build a new Unitary Council that is ambitious in its outlook, provides Buckinghamshire residents with simpler ways to access services that they need, and makes best use of public money.  Any changes made to the structure of local authorities in the county may affect council employees in the future.  Therefore, the five councils have agreed to restrict applications to this position to current employees of the five councils for a period of seven days from 11 January 2019 to 18 January 2019.  External candidates are welcome to submit their application at any point; however, if a current employee applies during this seven day period, their application will be assessed prior to the council considering applications from external candidates.

We are investing in our Strategic Planning and Infrastructure Service and recruiting to several key positions. The Assistant Strategic Planning Officer that is suitable for a recent graduate with accredited planning qualification or someone who is looking to widen their experience of strategic planning in a challenging environment.

About the role

Expect to be involved in a range of national as well as sub-national infrastructure projects and to provide professional advice and support to diverse internal and external customers – all with an emphasis on strategic spatial planning, neighbourhood planning, minerals and waste policy. You will gain a considerable amount of experience working with the districts on their local plans, responding to consultations and significant planning applications.


Supporting the Strategic Planning and Infrastructure Manager and Head of Strategic Planning and Infrastructure in the development and delivery of County wide strategic planning policy and infrastructure strategy, including the Buckinghamshire Minerals and Waste Local Plan, you will provide strategic planning advice and intelligence to decision makers, including elected members, both within the Growth & Strategy service, across the Transport, Economy and Environment Directorate and across other County Council business units.

About you

The Assistant Officer position you will be educated to degree level or have extensive planning knowledge and work experience within a local authority or private sector working on local planning and environmental issues. These posts would also be suitable for recent graduate with keen interest in town planning, built and natural environment and related area and to pursue a career in the planning profession.  You will have good inter-personal skills and be able to build working relationships with councillors, other professionals and the wider public, you will also need good written and spoken communication skills, and a commitment to customer care.
